Intense exercise causes changes in electrolyte concentration inside and outside the cell, i.e. loss of muscle K+ and gain of Na+, Cl- and Ca2+. Taurine regulates water and mineral salts in the blood. It maintains the movement of potassium, magnesium, and sodium across cell membranes and regulates the ionic balance between cells. Because of its ability to regulate electrolytes, it may play a role in preventing muscle cramps.
